HOW TO FIND & READ STAMPED VW BEETLE MK3 PART NUMBERS.

By Craig Atherton•4 min read•Updated October 2026

When buying replacement or upgraded parts for your modern 2011–2019 Volkswagen Beetle Mk3 (Type 5C), guessing by appearance alone is the single fastest way to order the wrong component.

Volkswagen uses a standardised nine-digit numbering system, often followed by one or two suffix letters. Because the Mk3 Beetle shares its PQ35 platform with models like the Golf Mk6 and Scirocco while maintaining unique bodywork and electrical specifications, the stamped OEM part number is your only guarantee of 100% plug-and-play fitment.

1. Anatomy of a VAG Part Number

A typical modern VW part number looks like this: 5C5 807 417 A or 1K0 407 151 AC.

  • The First 3 Characters (Model Prefix): E.g., 5C5 denotes a modern Mk3 Beetle Coupé component, 5C7 denotes a Cabriolet specific part, and 1K0 represents a shared Golf Mk5/Mk6 / PQ35 chassis component.
  • The Middle 3 Digits (Component Group): Tells you what system the part belongs to. E.g., 807 refers to exterior bumpers and trim; 941 refers to headlights.
  • The Last 3 Digits (Specific Item & Side): Identifies the exact part. In Volkswagen convention, an odd final digit (e.g. 1, 3, 5, 7) signifies the Nearside (left / passenger side UK), while an even final digit (e.g. 2, 4, 6, 8) signifies the Offside (right / driver side UK).
  • The Suffix Letters (Revision Level): E.g., A, B, AC. Suffix letters indicate revisions, factory colour codes, or supersessions. In electronic modules and headlamps, suffix letters often determine whether a part is compatible with Xenon or Halogen systems.

2. Where to Look on Common Components

Headlights & Tail Lights

Look on the top plastic casing or rear dust housing. There is almost always a white paper or silver foil adhesive barcode label with the part number printed in bold (e.g., 5C2 941 005 B). On Xenon units, make sure you record both the lamp housing number and the ballast unit number.

Bumpers & Exterior Body Panels

Bumpers have the part number embossed directly into the raw ABS or polypropylene plastic on the inner reverse side. You will usually need to look behind the wheel arch liner or from beneath the undertray.

Turbochargers & Mechanicals

Turbos have an aluminium identification plate riveted to the compressor housing. It will list the IHI or BorgWarner manufacturer code alongside the VW part number (e.g. 06J 145 702 K).

ABS Pumps & Electronic Control Units

The ABS module is located in the driver-side engine bay beneath the brake fluid reservoir. The part number is stamped directly onto the aluminium hydraulic block as well as the black electronic plastic solenoid lid. Both numbers must be matched for coding compatibility.

3. Searching Our Catalogue With Your Part Number

At BeetleBits UK, our search engine matches part numbers with or without spaces. Whether you type 5C5807417 or 5C5 807 417, our system will immediately cross-reference your query with our active stock.
