Bodywork & Salvage Advice

BUYING USED VW BEETLE BODY PANELS & MATCHING PAINT CODES.

By Craig Atherton•5 min read•Updated October 2026

Repainting a replacement car wing, door, or bumper can easily cost between £250 and £450 at a reputable bodyshop. Sourcing a genuine used panel in your Beetle's exact factory paint code is the single best way to repair accident damage while keeping costs down.

1. How to Find Your Factory Paint Code

Volkswagen places a white rectangular paper build specification sticker inside every car. On the modern Mk3 Beetle (2011–2019 Type 5C), this sticker is located in one of two places:

  1. Inside the Boot Floor / Spare Wheel Well: Lift the boot carpet. The paper build data sticker is adhered directly to the painted sheet metal floor next to the spare wheel or tyre inflation kit.
  2. Inside the Original Service Book: If you have the factory maintenance manual, an identical duplicate sticker was attached to the inside cover during pre-delivery inspection.

On the sticker, look for the line starting with Paint No. / Lacknr. It will be a 4-character code, usually beginning with L (e.g. LC9A or LY3D).

2. Popular Factory VW Beetle Mk3 Colours

Deep Black Pearl2T2TLC9XPearl Effect
Denim BlueD0D0LA5JSolid
Reef BlueC1C1LB5KMetallic
Candy White (Early 2011-13)B4B4LB9ASolid

A common trap: Candy White vs Pure White

Early 2011–2013 Beetles were finished in Candy White (LB9A), which has a warm creamy tint. From late 2013 onward, VW switched to Pure White (LC9A), which is a brighter, cooler white. If you put an LB9A wing on an LC9A car, the mismatch will be obvious in sunlight! Always check the sticker.

3. Coupé vs Cabriolet Panel Interchangeability

Many owners assume that all panels on a Coupé and Cabriolet are identical, but this is only partially true:

  • Front Wings & Bonnet: 100% interchangeable between Coupé and Cabriolet. A front wing from a 2015 Coupé will bolt directly onto a 2015 Cabriolet.
  • Front Bumpers: Fully interchangeable between body styles, though 2016+ facelift bumpers have revised lower grilles and fog lights.
  • Doors: NOT interchangeable. Cabriolet doors feature frameless glass reinforcement and different internal window regulator brackets compared to the Coupé.
  • Tailgate / Boot Lid: NOT interchangeable. The Coupé has a large lifting hatchback tailgate incorporating the rear window; the Cabriolet has a small, separate saloon-style boot lid that pivots upwards beneath the soft-top storage shelf.
  • Rear Quarter Panels: NOT interchangeable. Cabriolet rear wings incorporate soft-top hinge cutouts and rain channels.
